Our Impact & Journey
Since launching in 2019, UTurn has grown from a community-led idea into a trusted youth charity supporting young people and families across Tendring and Essex.
Our work combines early help, mentoring, safe spaces, targeted programmes and positive opportunities that help young people feel less alone, more supported and more able to cope with life’s challenges.
What Our Work Makes Possible
Our work helps young people to build confidence, improve wellbeing, feel safer, strengthen relationships and access the right support at the right time.
We create opportunities that are practical, supportive and rooted in the real lives of young people and families.
Our Approach in Action
At UTurn, our support is relationship-based, strengths-focused, youth-led and community-rooted.
We believe young people need trusted adults, positive spaces and support that sees their potential, not just their challenges.
That means building trust, sticking with young people when life feels tough, and working alongside families, schools and partners to create better outcomes.
Our Journey Since 2019
UTurn was founded in 2019 by Shani and Tania, who shared a determination to stand alongside young people who were struggling to be seen and heard.
Starting small, they offered a listening ear, practical help and positive opportunities to young people in Tendring.
Drawing on lived experience, strong family values and backgrounds in fostering and education, they built UTurn as a family-driven, community-rooted organisation.
Since then, UTurn has grown into a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and Youth Ambassadors, secured a hub, expanded outreach and developed new projects to meet the changing needs of young people and families.
Recognition and Growth
Over time, UTurn has continued to grow in reach, impact and community support.
We are proud to have received recognition including the High Sheriff’s Award and the King’s Award for Voluntary Service. These milestones reflect the commitment of our staff, volunteers, partners, supporters and the young people who help shape our work.
