Our History
UTurn was founded by Shani and Tania, whose journey began as colleagues and quickly grew into a bond that feels like family. United by a shared vision to make a positive difference in the lives of young people, they created UTurn with the goal of offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support to those who need it most.
Both Shani and Tania were raised in large, close-knit families that taught them the value of connection and community. Shani’s experience growing up in a fostering family, where her parents are dedicated foster carers, provided her with first-hand insight into the challenges young people often face. Tania, on the other hand, brings not only a teaching background but also a deeply personal understanding of loss and resilience. Having experienced the tragic deaths of her older sister and stepdad in an accident, Tania witnessed her mum’s struggle to raise three children alone. This heart-wrenching experience shaped her profound sense of empathy and strengthened her commitment to supporting others who face adversity.
From the very beginning, Shani and Tania involved their families in the development of UTurn. Recognising the importance of a strong support system, they engaged family members to contribute their insights and experiences, ensuring that the initiative was grounded in real-life understanding. This collaborative approach not only enriched the foundation of UTurn but also cultivated a strong sense of community and shared purpose among all involved.
Their mission is also informed by personal ties to frontline services. With family members working as social workers and police officers, Shani and Tania have witnessed the impact these systems can have on children, young people, and their families. This perspective fuels their dedication to creating a safe, supportive environment where every young person feels heard and valued.
What began as the vision of two friends has now grown into a wider movement. Today, Shani and Tania are supported by a passionate team of staff and volunteers who share their commitment to empowering young people. Together, they work to extend the reach of UTurn, ensuring that more children and young people can access the care, guidance, and opportunities they deserve.
At UTurn, the mission is clear: to ensure every young person feels supported, connected, and empowered to thrive. By creating spaces of belonging, resilience, and hope, the team is dedicated to helping the next generation build brighter, stronger futures.
